First Weekly Reflection

 May 15th, 2021

The first week of senior project was pretty awesome for me. I love what I chose to do for my project, and I am grateful that I have a close friend to do it with. This week has also been very, very informative, furthering my knowledge in this area of my interests. A lot of what I learned was from Diane and working at Ragged Mountain Physical Therapy, not necessarily from the surgeries. It is quite hard to learn a lot from just watching a surgery online because sometimes the surgeons do not talk often, others, I struggle to comprehend what they are saying because I personally have not gone through med school. Even so, the surgeries have been so amazing to watch. From Diane, I have learned an incredible amount in such a short time. Some things very simple such as preparing a heat pack. Others more complicated like what stim does, and why it is used. Another thing I have learned is that Russian Stim is extremely uncomfortable and leaves your legs (or wherever you got the Russian Stim) super, super, super sore. I can barely bend it. Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but it is still so incredibly sore. Everything this week pretty much went just as we expected. It was kind of hard for anything to not go the way we expected because our two activities were pretty much set in stone: working with Diane and watching surgeries, nothing can really go wrong with that. This week has furthered my love for medicine and also made my thigh stronger! Everything we did this week has benefited me, especially with reaching my goals. I already feel like I am meeting my goals. I have definitely furthered my knowledge in cardiothoracic surgery, furthered my knowledge in surgery in general, and working with Diane. I never really thought that PT was a fun thing, but when you are on the other side of it, it is honestly very fun. It may just be working with Diane and getting to joke around with her all day, but I have really been enjoying PT! With this week coming to an end, Teige and I are 28 hours into our senior project, with less than halfway to go.
